Understanding the Impact of Job Stereotypes on Students' Mindsets

Can I ask you one question? Which country do you belong to? Why am I asking this question? It is because the way people perceive and categorize professions can vary significantly from one country to another. In India, for instance, individuals are often categorized based on their work and caste, leading to a societal hierarchy that might undermine the value of certain jobs, such as that of a dishwasher. However, in the American states and European countries, people tend to be respected primarily on the basis of their caliber or behavior rather than the nature of their work.

I have always admired how these countries advocate for a human-centric approach, regardless of one's occupation. Without having personally experienced the west, my understanding has been shaped by what I have read in news and watched in movies and TV series. After all, media and literature are often reflections of society.

Now, let's consider the impact of a teacher's words on a student. When a teacher reprimands and offers suggestions about a student's career prospects, it can have profound implications. These comments can either create misconceptions about the value of certain professions or inspire a student to strive for greater achievements. Different students may react to such advice based on their family environment, the learning they have received, and the societal norms they have been exposed to.

From my perspective, if I were that student in high school during 9th and 10th grades, I would have taken such words seriously and would have worked hard to avoid being seen as a dishwasher or a non-human. However, at my age, my viewpoint on life and the world was still evolving, and I hadn't yet fully grasped the various aspects and circumstances that life presents.

In my second phase of learning during graduation, I would have received a full lecture on the importance of not judging people solely based on their profession or appearance. It is important to understand that such judgements do not reflect the essence of a person, but rather reveal more about the person making those judgements. Work is indeed a form of worship; it should be respected, especially if the person has a passion for their work.

Throughout history, there are many examples of individuals who started their careers as failures and worked under challenging conditions but eventually became role models for society. Based on my teacher's perspective, those who failed to complete their education must be destitute or beggars. However, life is not a one-size-fits-all scenario; destiny, personal sacrifices, and choices all play roles in shaping one's journey. What truly matters is the level of happiness and fulfillment one finds in their life. Therefore, it is essential to respect individuals, not just their jobs.

As we navigate through life, let us strive to understand and respect each person's unique journey and contributions, rather than limiting their value to their current profession. Embracing a mindset that focuses on human potential and personal growth can lead to a more inclusive and compassionate society.
