Halloween Decorating Trends in Suburban Neighborhoods

Halloween, a beloved holiday for many, sees households decked out with spooky decorations, enchanting lights, and eerie sounds. However, as the holiday loses its appeal in certain suburban neighborhoods, the question arises: How many houses around you decorate for Halloween?

How Many Houses Decorate for Halloween in Your Neighborhood?

Not every household in a neighborhood enthusiast is staunchly committed to Halloween festivities. Even in areas with a cultural predilection, not everyone partakes in the spirit of the season. For example, in my suburban subdivision, few households display any visible Halloween decorations.

I don't think anyone in our subdivision decorates for Halloween, and we don't either. shares one resident.

Living in an environment where others might not celebrate, they have kept their decorations limited to the living space. There is only one other house with younger children, but even they are older than elementary school age.

Personal Anecdotes and Observations

My mother, a long-time resident of a condo complex, has lived here since 1988, and I have owned the condo since 1999. My initial observation was that I have NEVER seen even one child trick-or-treating or heard of a single one in the 23 years of living here. It's a small complex with around 100 apartments, and the demographic skew is older and ethnic.

Given that not every household has children and not everyone’s upbringing includes Halloween as a significant celebration, it’s understandable why it might not be a priority for all.

Parents’ Persistent Interest in Halloween Candy

However, some parents, regardless of age or cultural background, continue to emphasize the importance of Halloween. Even with Alzheimer's, my mother consistently reminded me to buy candy “for the kids”. She had a sweet tooth herself, so I guess the tradition lived on within her.

Even with Alzheimer's, Mom always reminded me to buy candy 'for the kids'. one resident shares, adding that the memory often makes them smile.

For the holidays now, I will bring her chocolate every time, thoughtfully recognizing the impact of the holiday on her.

Conclusion

While Halloween may not be as celebrated in certain suburban areas, it’s clear that for some, the holiday retains its charm and significance. It’s all about understanding the cultural and personal background of the neighborhood and its residents.
