Why Do Cops Carry Glocks?

Why Do Cops Carry Glocks?

Back in the 1980s, Glock introduced a low-cost, reliable pistol that quickly gained popularity. Today, it's a no-brainer for many law enforcement officers (LEOs) to carry a Glock, despite the availability of other highly capable pistols like the HK striker pistols or the SIG P320.

Though HK had striker pistols well before Glock took the market, their lack of popularity can be attributed to issues like the VP70, which was considered subpar. However, SIG Sauer's P320 and P365 models have become extremely popular, and many police departments (PDs) have adopted the SIG P320, including the U.S. military. As an old-school hammer-fired auto pistol user, my perspective shifted significantly after trying the SIG P320, which offers superior quality and ergonomics alongside a more comfortable flat trigger. While Glocks will remain popular, they now face strong competition from SIG and other similar firearms.

Why Glock is Popular Among Police Departments

1. Large Discounts

One of the early advantages for police departments was the significant discount offered by Glock when purchasing the firearm for their departments. This practice continues today, making Glock a cost-effective choice for budget-conscious agencies.

2. Reliability and Durability

Another major appeal of Glock is its remarkable durability. Unlike the AK-47, a comparable firearm in terms of durability, Glocks can withstand extreme conditions. They can be dropped, stumped into the mud, sprayed with water, left to sit, and still function flawlessly. They are known for accepting various types of ammunition, even subpar discounts, with ease.

3. User-Friendly and Lightweight

Glocks are straightforward to use, relatively lightweight, and boast ample capacity. If a shooter can't get the job done with 171 rounds, they likely won't succeed with any standard ammunition. This simplicity and reliability make Glocks a preferred choice for many officers.

Do Police Departments Choose Glock Individually?

No, police departments don't individually choose Glock over other brands. While Glock is commonly used, other brands like SIG have also gained substantial popularity. However, agencies still prefer Glock because they provide the reliability and serviceability of a "Toyota truck." Replacements and parts are readily available, and the firearms are robust and long-lasting, even in less-than-ideal conditions.

My personal experience with Glocks first came from recommendations, as I was informed that they were simple to operate and would only malfunction if deliberately tried. Calling me 'Stupid and Simple' emphasizes these qualities of the firearm, making it a popular choice for those who value reliability and ease of use.

In summary, while other brands like SIG continue to gain traction, Glock remains a dominant choice in many law enforcement agencies due to its combination of cost, reliability, and user-friendly design.
